Politics 2018: President Trump’s Comment on S—hole Countries like Haiti

Anderson Cooper addressed President Trump’s remarks today, in which the president referred to nations like El Salvador and Haiti as “s—hole countries,” as he described his experiences with Haiti and its people.

“I want to take a moment to talk about Haiti, one of the places the president of the United States called a ‘s—hole country,’” he began on Anderson Cooper 360.

Cooper related how he was taught math in high school by a Haitian immigrant who, after returning to his native country, was assassinated while running for president.

Cooper had spent months in Haiti during his career, first visiting the country in the 1990s and then reporting after the earthquake struck in 2010.

“Like all countries, Haiti is a collection of people: it’s rich and poor, well-educated and not, good and bad,” he said. “But I’ve never met a Haitian who isn’t strong.”
