June 20, 2007–The Weinstein Co. has decided to open the film in New York this Friday, June 22, a week earlier than planned. The docu is also receiving sneak previews Saturday in 43 theaters spanning more than 30 markets, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas and Washington D.C., as well as Moore's hometown of Flint, Mich.
TWC said they made the decision to get the picture out early as a result of the reaction it has received at pre-release screenings. Monday night premiere drew a standing ovation.
“Sicko” will bow this weekend up against Paramount Vantage's “A Mighty Heart,” another politically charged film, MGM and TWC's supernatural horror “1408,” and Universal comedy “Evan Almighty.”
Moore's last docu, “Fahrenheit 9/11,” made over $119 million domestically in 2004.
