Angels & Demons tops Box Office

May 17, 2009—Sony's sequel to “The Da Vinci Code”, “Angels & Demons” grabbed the number 1 spot this weekend grossing $48 million in the U.S. from 3,527 locations.  Add to that another $104.3 million from international, the film opened to $152.3 million worldwide.  Though “Angels” did not open as strongly “The Da Vinci Code” which did $77 million domestically, this week end's global box office is impressive and exceded studio expectations.  The book sold less than half the copies of “The Da Vinci Code.”
Considering its massive opening last week, however, “Star Trek” held extremely well, dropping 42.8 percent in 3,860 theaters to come in a close second with and estimated $43 million.  “Star Trek” has grossed $146.9 million in its first ten days.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” took the number 3 slot with $14.8 million with a cume of $152 million, and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” number 4 with $6.9 million and a cum of $40 million. Rounding out the top 5 is “Obsessed” with $4.5 million dropping $30% for a cume of $62.6 million.
