Hellman, Monte: Iconic Filmmaker Celebrated

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will have a special presentation of To Hellman and Back: An Evening with Monte Hellman on Wednesday, June 8.

Featuring the New York City premiere of the iconoclastic filmmaker’s ROAD TO NOWHERE as well as a rare screening of his 1974 film COCKFIGHTER, the evening will include a book party to celebrate Charles Willeford’s classic novel, Cockfighter featuring a live musical performance by Matt Sweeney.

Presented in association with Monterey Media and Picture Box Books, the evening will include:

ROAD TO NOWHERE

Written by Steven Gaydos, and produced by Hellman, Gaydos and Melissa Hellman, the film stars Shannyn Sossamon, Dominique Swain, Waylon Payne, Cliff de Young, John Diehl and Tygh Runyan.

Hellman’s first film behind the camera in more than two decades, the story focuses on the web of intrigue a filmmaker finds himself caught up in as he makes a film based upon a true crime. The director has cast an unknown mysterious young woman that bears a striking resemblance to the femme fatale in the story and becomes obsessed with the woman, the crime, her possibly notorious past and the disturbing complexity between art and truth. ROAD TO NOWHERE will screen at 6:00PM and will be followed by a Q&A with Hellman and cast members.

COCKFIGHTER

Celebrating the brand new Picture Box Books edition of Charles Willeford’s classic. COCKFIGHTER (1974) has been described as “one of the most explicit studies of repression the American cinema has ever produced”. The film stars Warren Oates as a destitute individual who lays it all on the line for the sport of cockfighting. The film co-stars Harry Dean Stanton, Laurie Bird and Ed Begley Jr. COCKFIGHTER screens at 8:30PM.

A book party to celebrate the release of Picture Box Books’ new edition of Charles WIlleford’s Cockfighter.

Live music performance by Matt Sweeney.

Guitarist, vocalist and composer, Sweeney has performed and recorded with Neil Diamond, Kid Rock, Johnny Cash and Bonnie Prince Billy.

Film Comment Senior Editor Chris Chang said, “It’s extremely exciting to be able to not just host a filmmaker such as Monte Hellman, but to finally see Willeford’s classic novel back in circulation. For the price of one ticket it’s a triple threat evening.”

For the single admission price of $12.00 ($9 Students/ $8 Seniors/ $7 Members) filmgoers will receive access to both movies as well as the book party with musical performance.  Tickets are on sale both at the box office and on-line. Discounts are available for Film Society members.

To Hellman and Back: An Evening with Monte Hellman will be held at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, located at 165 West 65th Street, between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway.
