Directed by Eugene Jarecki, The King is set 40 years after the death of the so-called King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
The docu is a musical road trip across America in Presley’s 1963 Rolls-Royce that explores how a country boy lost his authenticity and became a king while his country lost her democracy and became an empire.
Alec Baldwin, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones and Mike Myers are among those featured in The King.
Spike Lee’s Pass Over
Also playing in the Special Events section is a Spike Lee-directed project titled Pass Over, a riff on Waiting for Godot.
Jon Michael Hill and Julian Parker star in the timely play written by Antoinette Nwandu about two young black men talking shit, passing the time and dreaming of the promised land.
