AIDS International Day: December 1

December 1: International AIDS Day

To commemorate the Interantional AIDS Day, we revisit three significant movies about the the HIV epidemic: two small-budget indies and one star-driven mainstream Hollywood picture.

Parting Glances, the first American (indie, of course) about AIDS, and the first time I saw on the big screen the gifted Steve Buscemi, who would become an icon of the New American Independent Cinema.

Longtime Companion, which won the Audience Award at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival.

Philadelphia, the first mainstream Hollywood about AIDS (as late as 1993).  Directed by the late Jonathan Demme, it earned Tom Hanks his first Best Actor Oscar Award.
